Last night had been a full moon, not the best of times for a shifter. Jaylee hadn’t been able to stop the change, not surprising since that was a common trait among shifters. Even worse, Jay had had a lot on her mind, things ranging from work to a social life (or lack thereof). The thoughts had made her attribute the agitated feelings to stress, not the patterns in the night sky. She was cursing herself now for not paying better attention. Since she hadn’t been anticipating the change that would be forced upon her, she also hadn’t been paying much attention to what was going on around her. She’d shifted into her cat form, tearing apart her clothes in the process and losing the key to her house somewhere in the woods.
Luckily, she was a born shifter and was more than capable of shifting at will as well. So instead of walking around Bon Temps and going to the locksmith’s naked, Jaylee was walking around as a calico cat, her go-to form. People liked cats, usually. Unless they were die-hard dog lovers, in which case Jaylee was screwed and the more popular shifter, Sam Merlotte, was set. Sure, she knew about Sam, wasn’t really a secret when you could smell shifter. Not that she ever brought it up, or really talked to the guy for that matter. She was too shy for that.
It didn’t take long for Jaylee to decide where to go. She had been looking for her key in her cat form for what seemed like hours, but she couldn’t even remember where she dropped it and her scent was all over the woods. The girl wouldn’t be able to get inside of her home, knowing everything was all locked up, windows included because the air conditioning was on. So she wouldn’t be able to get inside without breaking a window or something and she couldn’t go straight to a locksmith because she would have to turn back into a human for that, a completely naked human.
Loree’s place wasn’t far away and it took less than a minute for Jay to decide a visit to her friend’s home was in order. Loraine was a lot like Jaylee personality wise, though physically, they were practically opposites. Loree was dark-haired and really petite, while Jay had sun kissed blonde hair and was slim, but definitely had more of a muscular build… probably because of the whole being a shifter thing. Jay mentally sighed. Loree didn’t know that she was a shifter yet. The cat-woman (har har) hadn’t been keeping it from her friend really, she just hadn’t felt the need to broadcast the information. It would probably take some explaining, though to be honest Jay didn’t know how much Loree really knew about the supernatural world.
The cat stood on the front porch now, crying ‘meow’ and scratching lightly at the door. Jay hoped her friend was home; it would make things so much easier on her.

Loraine had just got home early from work, finishing the paperwork for the auto shop quickly. She was tired. At least this jo had well enough pay that she didn't really need to work another job at the same time. When she got home she found her father laying on the floor in the kitchen drunk again. He did this quote regularly. She helped him up and put him on the couch so he could at least pass out there.
"Make sure that dawg dun get my shoes..." her dad drunkenly slurred as he was bout to pass out n the ouch again.. Loraine rolled her eyes and threw a blanket over her fathers out-cold figure. "Yes Daddy," she said. She grabbed the bottle of whiskey from his limp hands before he spilled it on the carpet. She went into the kitchen and put it in the sink, dumping it out. They didn't have a dog... She sighed again and trudged into her small room, changing out of her work clothes.
She shuffled back into the kitchen and opened the fridge to find something edible. Not much but beer. Well, beer was bread in a can... Loraine took a Bud Light and popped the top. For some reason her Dad never drank the beer they had int he fridge. But she did sometimes when she came home.
As she leaned on the kitchen counter as she sipped at the brew, she heard a soft meowing and something padding at the front door. Loraine pushed off he counter, knowing who it was. She opened the door and smiled down at the Calico that sometimes graced her home randomly.
Loraine picked the cat up. "Hey kitty," she said and scratched underneath the cats chin. Loraine glanced over at her father and made sure he was still asleep on the couch. When she saw that he was she took the cat into her bedroom. She set the cat down on her bed, and pat her head. "What have you been up to Miss Lady?" she didn't really have a name for the cat, but she thought she might start. Loree was an animal person. She especially loved cats though. Calm and mellow, sometimes hyper when needed.

Sometimes she liked being a cat better than being a person. Not that she didn’t enjoy being around people, life was just more simple as a cat. People either liked you or didn’t like you. She spent a lot of time as a cat around Loree’s place, mostly because it was familiar, so she wasn’t surprised when Loree picked her up and brought her inside. The cat glanced at the guy on the couch and rolled her eyes, purring as the dark-haired woman pet her and took her into the bedroom. It was really sad about Loree’s living situation, but she doubted the girl would leave her father any time soon since the man seemed to rely so much on his daughter.
Jaylee had had a long night and she wanted nothing more than to just curl up and go to sleep, but she knew that if she did that she’d wake up as a human and probably to a very confused Loraine. The last thing she needed was Loree thinking she was some sort of stalker. She meowed a few more times and pawed at the blanket, working her way under the covers as if she thought she saw something going under them. After she was about a third of the way under the blankets she began to shift.
This was the part she was worried about. As far as she knew, her friend didn’t have anything against vampires. Jaylee only hoped the same applied to other supernatural things too. After all, she was the same person. She hadn’t changed - still the shy police station secretary that drove the same old beat up car.
She poked her head out of the blanket, afraid to look at her friend’s face, terrified to see the reaction. “Hey,” she said tentatively, wrapping the blanket around her as she sat up. “Don’t freak out, kay? But I can’t get into my house, so I had to come somewhere else to shift.” ooc: gah, sorry it's so short

Loraine pet the cat once more before the cat went under the covers over her bed as if chasing something "Where you going Kitty?" she asked. When the cat didn't come out from under the covers, Loree shrugged and turned to fold her work clothes up.
“Hey,” said a familiar voice behind her right as she turned around. Loraine spun around and slapped her hand over her mouth to keep from screaming as she saw her good friend Jaylee poking up from under the covers. “Don’t freak out, kay? But I can’t get into my house, so I had to come somewhere else to shift.”
Loraine stared at her, her hand still over her mouth, her eyes wide as Jaylee covered herself up with the blanket. Loraine's heart pounded and her mind was running through a different thoughts. Her hand slowly went away from her mouth. "What th-" she stuttered at first. "But! You-... And I... The Cat! What?!" she was confused. "Jaylee, what the hell is going on??" she said. But right before Jaylee was about to speak, Loraine held a finger up. "Wait a minute, hold on." she said, and went into the kitchen and got another beer from the fridge, chugged it, checked on her sleeping father and went back into the bedroom, closing and locking the door.
She stood infront of Jaylee and took in a breath. "Ok... Now... Can you please explain to me exactly whats going on?" she asked calmly.

Maybe this hadn’t been such a brilliant idea; Jaylee was thinking that she probably should have gone to Sam’s, or a were’s place - someone who knew what to expect even if they didn’t really know Jay all that well. Or maybe she should have just broken into her own house, she could have broken a window or something with a brick, but it’d be kind of weird to anyone who might be watching to see a naked woman climbing through a window. The simple thought of it had her blushing. Besides, she wouldn’t have the money to replace the window anyway, and she was already going to need to have the locks changed on her house. No, aside from going to Sam’s (which wasn’t an appealing idea), this was the only real option. Besides, she was going to need a shirt at the least if she was going to get out of any building as a human. She didn’t need someone calling the police station. She could just imagine that call. Hey, yeah, your secretary is walkin’ ‘round town buck naked. Ya might wanna do somethin’ ‘bout that. That wouldn’t be good. Jaylee didn’t need anything on her record, especially with working at the station.
The blonde committed herself to keeping her mouth shut while her friend, if Loraine would still be her friend after this, got her thoughts together. She watched as the dark-haired woman left the room, it felt like Jay had been holding her breath for a while, since she’d shifted, and she hadn’t realized she’d actually been doing it until her friend left the bedroom. She exhaled and lied back down. Jay couldn’t believe how tired she was, and she doubted she’d be able to sleep any time soon, not with Loree just finding out what she was. When the woman came back, Jaylee sat up again, holding the blanket around her body.
Of course Loree would want to know exactly what was going on, and Jay wasn’t going to deny her any answers, the blonde owed her friend that much. “I’m a shape shifter.” The words were getting easier to say every time she said it. Jay wasn’t one to hide that she changed into a cat, but she’d been a bit worried that Loree wouldn’t be her friend if she knew what Jay was. “It hereditary. My dad and brother are shifters, too.” She shrugged. “I usually take the form of that cat. And usually I do a pretty good job of keepin’ track of the moon. But I was a bit preoccupied and I ended up losin’ my key, an’ I didn’t know where else to go.”

Loree could not believe her ears as Jay said she was a shape shifter. This was beyond anything she had ever thought. Loree was silent for a moment, looking at Jaylee. But then she turned and went into her dresser and got a pair of sweats that were too long for her, and an over sized tee shirt.
She tossed them at Jay. "Here..." she said quietly. Loraine turned her back as she waited for Jaylee to dress. "A shape shifter huh?" she said as she looked at her wall."Are there many of those around here? Or, would telling me break some kind of 'shifter code' or something..." she said doing air quotes on 'shifter code'.
Once Jaylee was done, she turned back around. "You aren't breaking any like... laws or anything right?" she asked, feeling kind of dumb for asking. But it didn't hurt. She was glad that her friend was telling her this. She was one of the few people she trusted in this town anyhow.

Jay blinked a few times, allowing her brain to register what her friend had thrown at her. “Thanks,” she mumbled, grateful that Loree was being so understanding about this new information. She really didn’t deserve a friend like Loraine when she thought about it, not after keeping this sort of thing from her friend. But she was glad that their friendship might be salvageable. After all, it wasn’t like anyone had ever really asked if there was something different about Jaylee; the fact that she was a shifter just never came up… of course Jay hadn’t been planning on bringing it up either.
“Yeah, shifter.” She started to get dressed. It didn’t take long, Jaylee was anxious to have clothes on her body, it just made her feel less exposed. She was a bit taller than Loree so she was a bit cautious, afraid the clothes might not fit, but it looked as though the clothes were picked just because they were too big for Loree. That was a relief, not that Jay would have been upset about walking around in clothes that were too short, but she didn’t want to damage anything Loree owned either. “Um, not that I know of, we don’t really have a ton of rules. We’re not really organized like the vamps are, and we’re definitely not public with our… condition… like they are either. There are a few, but I don’t know if I should tell ya who the are right now, they might get kinda mad. Some of us don’t really like others knowin’, specially in a small town, ‘cause not everyone’s all accepting. I don’t really try to hide what I am, but I don’t exactly want it broadcasted either…” She looked at the floor and sat back down on the bed, wondering exactly how this would affect things between her and her friend.
But she looked up when Loraine asked if she was breaking any laws. “Of course not. I work for the police. I ain’t killin’ nothing or no one and I ain’t breakin’ in anywhere either. Look, I’m sorry I haven’t told ya ‘til now, but I ain’t any different than what I was before. You just know now that I turn into an animal some nights, ‘s’all.”
